By their nature rivers and canals provide an excellent opportunity for cycling. Towpaths and riverside trails can take you through beautiful scenery and allow visits to attractive towns and villages along the way. Burgundy is blessed with two of France’s finest canals – the Canal de Bourgogne and the Canal du Nivernais - the latter being widely regarded as the most picturesque and tranquil in the country.

Our 6 night holiday shows you the best of the Burgundy waterways and also takes you  to the splendid historic towns of Vézelay and Auxerre. The rich history of Burgundy and its beautiful landscapes are typified by Vézelay. The Basilica of Sainte Madeleine, perched above the town, is a Romanesque masterpiece, and rightly included on Unesco’s world heritage list. Before Vézelay you’ll have seen the remarkable Renaissance châteaux of Ancy-le-Franc and Tanlay between Montbard and Tonnerre. You’ll have visited Joigny and Auxerre, two lovely towns with half-timbered houses and attractive cobbled streets. Throughout you will stay in characterful hotels or chambres d’hôtes (guest houses) ; a half board option is available.

The holiday start point Montbard is easily accessed by rail from Paris, and we’ll transfer you back to the station at the end of your holiday. If you travel by car to Montbard we will transfer you back from Vézelay at the end of the holiday. Please ask us if you would like extra nights in Montbard or any other location.
