The Charente Maritime has an enviable sunshine record equalling that of Mediterranean France. This and its many attractions make the area a popular holiday destination. La Rochelle is your base for the first four nights. The town is steeped in history, mirrored in its gracious old buildings, its grand old port dominated by the two famous towers, and the vibrant atmosphere of its pedestrianised streets with their unusual stone vaulted arcades and enticing restaurants and shops.
La Rochelle was a pioneer in the promotion of urban cycling, long before London, Paris or New York jumped on the bandwagon. Everywhere there are municipal bike hire stands with collections of bright yellow Yélos Vélos ready for action. You can benefit from this cycling culture by following cycle paths out of town and beyond. There is a range of cycling routes taking you up and down the coast, and inland using minor roads and canal towpaths.
The Île de Ré is linked to the mainland by a graceful 4km bridge. The island is renowned for its beauty and cycle friendliness in equal measure. A bike is the best way of appreciating the lovely whitewashed villages and the glorious coastline fringed by long sandy beaches. Cycle ways criss cross the island and you can complete several routes during your three night stay in the delightful port of Saint-Martin-de-Ré.
