Burgundy is one of France’s historic jewels. At its height in the 14th and 15th centuries the Duchy of Burgundy was one of the richest and most powerful states in Europe, and rivalled France itself. It was only in 1477 that Burgundy became part of France. Its landscapes of gently rolling hills, vine-covered hillsides and pastoral valleys are an ideal setting for a cycling holiday. Add to this the rich mixture of historical towns and villages and the world famous wine and food of the region and you have every reason for choosing this holiday.

Auxerre which lies just 1½ hours from Paris by train is an excellent start point for your holiday. The attractive pedestrianised centre with its atmospheric medieval streets and half-timbered houses plays host to the famous clock tower and the beautiful 13th century gothic cathedral.

The cycling takes you to the large Cistercian Abbey of Pontigny and then through the famous vineyards of Chablis where you can sample some of the produce! Then on to lovely Noyers with its cobbled streets and timbered houses, and the splendid ancient town of Avallon. Vézelay is an important pilgrimage town whose basilica is accorded Unesco world heritage status.

The final leg of your journey takes you across open country to the River Yonne and the Canal du Nivernais, one of France’s loveliest waterways. Follow the river and canal on well-maintained cycle paths back to Auxerre.
