The ‘Boat & Bike’ formula is perfect for this part of France, where waterways combine with rural cycle routes to produce an itinerary rich in interest with something for everyone. The Camargue is one of France’s most outstanding nature reserves - a protected wilderness where the web of lagoons and vast areas of marshland play host to flamingos, herds of white horses and a huge variety of wildlife. You sail through the reserve and see the fascinating towns of Aigues-Mortes with its imposing walls, and historic Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, with its beautiful church and fabled association with biblical times.

A combination of sailing and cycling allows you to spend time in Arles with its remarkable Roman architecture, and to visit St.Rémy-de-Provence and Les Baux-de-Provence, two of the region’s iconic locations. St.Rémy was the birthplace of Nostradamus, and is where Van Gogh spent a year in an asylum in the care of nuns. The area around Arles was of course depicted in many of Van Gogh’s works. Les Baux is a remarkable village built into limestone cliffs.

A visit to the Pont du Gard, Europe’s best preserved Roman aqueduct, and to the lovely city of Avignon with its immense Papal Palace and famous half-finished bridge, and to tastefully restored Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its legendary wine association add to the list of attractions on this rewarding holiday.
