On this bike route you will explore lowland forests, original villages and magical cities. Of course the cities of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest are the best-known on the tour. In Carnuntum and in the Roman castle Kelemantia you find Roman relics from the past.
Discover the diversity of the flora and fauna in the lowland forests. The small villages, which you cycle through, still keep their original charm. Rye Island, which you will pass through, is a real natural paradise.
Don't forget the numerous castles and palaces, which are proudly situated nearby the Danube. Overall, this bike tour will inspire and delight everybody!
Day 1: Individual arrival to Vienna
We recommend that you arrive into Vienna early. This wonderful city on the Danube has so much offer, and it is well worth staying for a longer time. Enjoy a cup of coffee and a traditional Viennese cake (Sachertorte) in one of the numerous coffee houses. Alternatively, you can enjoy a roundtrip in a horse-drawn cab (Fiaker).
Day 2: Vienna - Bratislava (approx. 68 km)
The first ride on the tour will guide you through the national park Donau-Auen. There you will be able to discover a great diversity of flora and fauna as well as the beautiful and varied landscape. You will pass the castle Orth and the village of Eckertsau before you reach Bad Deutsch Altenburg. There you can make an excursion on the Roman bike trail (Römerweg) to Carnuntum. This archaeological park is widely considered one of Austria's most significant archaeological sites. After Hainburg you reach the border to Slovakia and it's capital city, Bratislava which is your destination for the day, and where you will spend your overnight stay.
Day 3: Bratislava - Mosonmagyaróvár (approx. 45 km)
After cycling just a short distance in Slovak territory, you will pass the Hungarian border in Rajká. Beofre long, you will discover charming Hungarian villages. This area of the country is heavily influenced by agriculture. Your route then guides you through the area known as Szigetköz (a small Rye Island), which is characterized by numberless side arms of the Danube. Today´s destination is Mosonmagyaróvár which is also commonly known as the "City of 17 Bridges“.
Day 4: Mosonmagyarovar/surrounding – Komarno/surrounding (approx. 45 km + train ride Györ - Komarom)
Today you will ride through the unique and delightful landscape of the “Szigetköz” protected area and then on to Györ, one of the most important cities in the Hungarian lowlands and will charm you with its alluring historical city centre. You can enjoy a pleasant walk through the narrow lanes, past the churches and the palaces of the Baroque city centre. King Matthiashimself referred this it as his favorite city! You will finish the day by travelling to Komarom by train.
Day 5:Komarno/surrounding – Danube bend (approx. 57 km)
Today you cycle along the banks of the Slovakian Danube on small roads with very little traffic. You will pass through several quaint and traditional villages. On your way to the “Town of Bishops and Kings”, Esztergom, you will pass the impressive Roman fort of Kelemantia. The largest Catholic Church in Hungary, the Esztergom Basilica, is sure to take your breath away and is well worth a visit! The rest of the distinctive village of Esztergom also proves to be a highlight and glamorous part of the overall tour.
Day 6: Danube bend – Budapest (approx. 62 km + ship ride Szentendre - Budapest)
As it winds through the rolling hills, the Danube divides itself, creating the Szentendre Island. Here, you will cycle down the small country roads and through quaint and welcoming villages. Discover the Open-air Museum Skanzen. If you are a fan of shopping, you are sure to enjoy the numerous handicraft boutiques, which also provide the opportunity to buy wonderful Hungarian souvenirs in Szentendre city-center. During the boat- or train ride to Budapest, you will have a fantastic view of some of the most famous sights of Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
Day 7: Budapest
Enjoy a day in the buzzing metropolis of Budapest. If you want you can go back to Vienna by bus, and further explore 'the city of the Waltz'. There are departures by bus scheduled every 2 hours, on a daily basis. The bus has to be booked prior to arrival. Duration of trip approx. 3 hours. On request the bus ialso stops at Vienna International Airport.
Day 8: Individual departure, transfer to Vienna or extension
In the Hungarian capital city there is so much to entice and entertain. If you are interested in prolonging your tour, we would be pleased to book some extra nights for you. Our transfer from Budapest to Vienna is very comfortable (this can be arranged at additional charge).
You cycle on bike trails, ways alongside a dam and partly on relatively quiet side roads. Busy roads are of short-term duration. You cycle on unmade paths only for 3 short distances otherwise you will find asphalted roads. On the whole the route is signed very well with a few exceptions in the Slovakian part. Altogether the tour is relatively easy with slightly increases in some sections.

Flights are available with a number of airlines to your required airport or you can travel to the start using alternative methods such as rail or road.
We recommend using Skyscanner to find the best flight prices by date or Rail Europe for European rail travel. There is customer car parking available at most hotels for a supplement. Please contact us for more details.

You do not need to go back to the starting point of the cycling holiday as all hire bikes are left at the final hotel.

About the Rental Bikes
This cycling holiday uses quality crossbar and unisex hybrid bikes based on KTM frame technology, Selle Royal saddles, Shimano components and puncture-proof tyres to ensure that you have an enjoyable cycle tour. The bikes feature modern V-brakes, aluminium frames with mudguards, comfortable saddles and a rack for a supplied waterproof pannier.
You will also receive a handlebar bag and map holder for easy navigation when riding your daily itinerary. Prices advertised on the website include standard bike hire (unless stated). Colour and specification may vary from the image shown.

Rental Bike PLUS
For 2020, there is an additional bike rental option available for a supplement. The PLUS hybrid bike now available on most cycling holidays is sportier with higher quality brakes (Magura HS 11) and better specification gears (Shimano Deore XT). The riding position is designed to have a slightly sportier sitting posture and a high quality Suntour suspension fork gives smooth riding on most surfaces. All accessories are compatible with the new PLUS bike rental option.
Accessories
If you would like GPX files for a suitable device, please request them at the time of booking. Devices are not provided and please make sure that you bring along with you any fittings required to attach the Garmin (or similar) to the handlebars. You might want to download maps onto your phone to avoid data charges when roaming.
All bikes are provided with standard flat pedals. You can bring your own cycling pedals, but ensure that you have the correct tools to remove the pedals if the tour does not have a welcome meeting. You may also not be able to travel through airports with the tools if you are carrying hand luggage only.
You can rent a men's bike with a crossbar, unisex/female bike with a sloping tube or an electric bike for a supplement.
Gears
7 speed bikes are equipped with a Shimano Nexus gear hub and 21 speed bikes have a Shimano Alivio derailleur. We request 21 speed bikes for all cycling holidays (when available).
Frame Sizing
When you make a booking with us, we take your height(s) and the appropriate bike size is matched up accordingly. Unisex frame 21-gears with freewheel. Sizes: 56 / 51 / 46 / 43 cm. Unisex 7-gears-bikes with back pedalling brake. Sizes: 56 / 51 / 46 cm. Men’s speed bikes 21-gears with free wheel and crossbar. Sizes: 64 / 60 / 56 "sloping" cm. Helmets are not provided and you will need to bring your own to use.
We always recommend wearing a helmet when on your cycling holiday!
Bike Hire Insurance
This cycle tour benefits from bike insurance against rental bike theft and damage in the holiday price. Please make sure you lock up the bike, leave it where told by the hotel and treat your hire bicycle as if the bike was your own. Any negligent treatment of the bike will exempt you from cover. We advise you to ensure that you have adequate travel insurance for your cycling holiday prior to arrival.
Electric Bike Hire
Why not upgrade your cycling experience to an E-Bike (Electric Bike)? Using a power assisted bike is a great way to go on a cycling holiday and will help you smooth out inclines or longer days in the saddle. Each E-Bike features an LCD display, removable batteries for easy charging and assistance up to 25 km/h with a range of around 120 km for each full charge depending on usage.
