Cycle from Bordeaux to Biarritz along the Atlantic coast via the Velodyssee. Ride out to meet man, nature, heritage and culture of the Gironde, Landes and Basque Country.
Explore landscapes through the Velodyssee, the longest cycling tracks in France and Europe, and enjoy the wonderful tranquility all along the coast! These six steps bike tour will lead you from Bordeaux, a UNESCO World heritage site to the famous seaside town of Biarritz.
You will cycle between lake and ocean going through the vast forested area of the Landes de Gascogne. Discover a variety of landscapes: salt marshes, dunes, forests, large beaches surrounded by pine trees and intimate lakes along your trip. Breathe the sea air, the perfume of the pine trees, mimosa and brooms.
There are many restaurants and bars abound where the oysters and duck specialties await you.
Once you arrive, take time to explore the wonders of Bordeaux, whic has been declared "an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble", and World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Stroll along the Garonne dock, or meander through the lively streets of St. Pierre quarter, bargain-hunt in the Chartrons quarters, or have fun on the mesmerising water mirror.
Your first ride will lead you toward one of the most famous vineyards in France: Château-Margaux. As soon as you leave Bordeaux, you will find yourself surrounded by vineyards. It will be easy to find somewhere to enjoy a wine tasting or winery visit.
Lap up the pleasant vinyard landscape for some kilometers, before reaching the cycle paths. These will guide you, on a gentle route, toward Lacanau-Océan, by the pines of the greatest forest in France: the Landes forest. From here, it is easy to reach your hotel where a swimming pool is waiting for you.
The route today will lead you, by the side of the ocean, all the way to Arcachon. The stage is a subtle mix of pine and fine sand dunes. You can leave your bikes wherever you wish to, along the route, and take a break to enjoy the beaches. Arriving at the Cap Ferret, take the ferry, with your bikes, that will take you accross to Arcachon. The hotel, you will find, is not far from the beaches, you will be welcomed, and then can enjoy some fun in the Bay waves!
Today's ride is only a shorter stage, which gives you the perfect opportunity to take advantage of your fabulous surroundings. Take time to discover a must see sight: the Dune of Pilat. You will be rewarded for your efforts on the ascent: from the top you will be able to enjoy a panoramic view of the fabulous Bay of Arcachon.
The route now heads inland where you can discover the interior of the Landes and its ponds. From here, the route gets more sinuous and more hilly. It winds its way between the dunes and the big lakes (Biscarrosse, Parentis, Aureilhan), until you eventually arrive at the seaside resort of Mimizan-Plage, which is sure to charm you with its Belle- Epoque architecture.
The Vélodyssée finds a peaceful route along the coast, in the heart of the pine forest. Contis les Bains is an ideal mfirst stop. A small unusual detour for a superb point of view? the visit of the lighthouse of Contis with the ascent of its 183 steps. After Saint Girons Plage, the route slowly departs from the ocean by a cycle path that alternates between forest and small roads. Leon lake invites you to swim before returning to the coast and reach Vieux Boucau, original with its marine lake.
The final stage will offer you an absolute treat. The beautiful bike path leaves the Landes and will eventually bring you to where surf is king. You ride along the longest sandy beach in Europe to the famous resorts of Hossegor and Capbreton, where some of the best surfers in the world live and train. Here, do not miss the inevitable walk on the Estacade, a wooden pier built by Napoleon III in the 19th century.
