Cycle from Granada to Seville on this self-guided holiday in Spain. Explore the unique region of Andalucía, with its mix of European and Arabic cultures, and cycle through the landscape of the Sierra Mountains.
Explore the fascinating cities of Seville and Cordoba and visit the famous Alhambra Palace in Granada. Ride along former railway lines and quiet roads and end your trip in Seville where you can visit the largest gothic cathedral in the world.
1st Day: Individual arrival in Málaga
Malaga, a bustling port city on the Mediterranean Sea, is characterized by both its historical landmarks, and its stunning scenery with beautiful beaches.
This city was home to one of the most notable of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso.
Picasso’s influence runs through the entire city and can be explored fully at the famous Picasso Museum.
Other highlights that are waiting to be discovered include the imposing cathedral, the Moorish Alcazaba fortress, and the castle Gibralfaro.
2nd Day: Trip by Bus to Granada and Visit to the Alhambra
Today will start with an approximate 2-hour bus transfer that will take you to the beautiful city of Granada.
Here you will discover one of the most iconic and influential historical monuments of Andalusia. The fabulous Alhambra (the red castle) has stood since the 9th century and used to be a fortress in earlier times.
A ticketed guided tour, through the walls of the Alhambra and led by an expert, is exclusively for Freewheel guests. During the 2.5 hour tour you will get to see all the highlights of the Alhambra.
In the evening, you will go to Antequera, the starting point of the bike tour.
3rd Day: Antequera – Lucena approx. 65 km
The historic city of Antequera is waiting to greet you at the gates of the kingdom of Granada. It is sure to impress with its collection of red tiled roofs and 30 steeples.
The bike tour will begin today with a ride on the old railway line, which runs through the beautiful countryside to Lucena.
This is one of the most prominent olive oil-producing regions of the world. The famous oil is pressed in the mills that you will pass on your journey.
4th Day: Lucena – Baena approx. 35 km
Today your journey continues, as you cycle again along an old railway line, passing vast olive groves on your way to Baena.
The people of Baena make their living mainly from agriculture and are very conscious of culture and tradition.
Baena itself, which is located on a hill, is also a very traditional town. It is characterized by narrow streets that wind their way through the old town. Here, you can find interesting religious buildings such as the Church of Santa Maria la Mayor which dates back to the 16th century.
5th Day: Baena – Cordoba approx. 55 km
The former European Capital of Culture, the city of Cordoba, framed by the foothills of the Sierra Morena mountains, is the next stop on your tour.
Today’s route will take you on almost empty streets and is mostly downhill. There is just one fairly long and a few short climbs, as you approach Cordoba.
This evening, you will have the opportunity to participate in a city tour, where you will feel the presence of the city’s dazzling cosmopolitan past. Moorish architects created masterpieces, such as the Great Mosque, which is besides the Alhambra, the most significant building of Moorish design in Europe.
6th Day: Cordoba – Ecija/Palma del Rio approx. 55 km
You will leave Cordoba on an old Roman connecting road, that runs through the wide valley of the Guadalquivir. Again today, you will have the opportunity to experience anthentic Spanish countryside.
Ecija is a major city for horse breeding. Renowned stud farms are characterised mainly by their Andalusian horses (local thoroughbreds), Arabian horses, and English hot bloods.
7th Day: Ecija/Palma del Rio – Carmona approx. 65 km
Today will also begin along the banks of the Guadalquivir. You will continue your journey through the Campiña of Seville, where you can enjoy a gently rolling landscape of fertile farmland. Carmona is a city that has not changed much for over 150 years. It is home to Baroque palaces, churches and monasteries, and is surrounded by intact Moorish town walls.
8th Day: Carmona – Seville approx. 25 km + 20km train journey
Today you will cycle over the gently rolling plateau of Alcores, and head into one of the most fertile agricultural areas in Andalusia.
Considered one of the cradles of flamenco;for centuries it was Alcalá de Guadaira that supplied Seville with bread and water.
Today the ultimate destination is Seville, where three of the most iconic operas are set: Don Juan, the seducer; the cunning barber Figaro; and Carmen, the femme fatale, who, so the story goes, lost her life somewhere between the tobacco factories and the bullfight arena.
Two international exhibitions helped the city to futuristic buildings and great green parks.
In the evening we suggest a visit to the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, the Barrio Santa Cruz, and the Casa de Pilatos.
9th Day: Departure or Extension of Trip
You can either depart today, following breakfast, or alternatively extend your trip and discover more of this wonderful landscape.
Difficulty:Challenging
At least one cycling holiday a year is pretty much compulsory for you! You are a perfect example of one of our typical guests, who regularly goes out for bike rides at the weekends. Now and again, you like to battle with a long, steep hill or a days cycle ride with an undulating profile. But, in order to have time to enjoy the rest of the ride, the route should then become flatter and more leisurely again afterwards.
The bike routes are alternately flat and hilly. You will cycle on bike paths (former railway lines) and side roads. In some cases, you will find yourself on roads with more traffic, especially when entering or leaving a city.
Total distance cycled: 305 km
