Experience a thrilling cycle tour that takes in the best of the natural beauty and history of north-western Sardinia. You will cycle from the sea to the lakes, from archaeological sites to castles, from woods to beaches. On route, you can experience such highlights as the old town centres of Alghero, Bosa and Santu Lussurgiu, the impressive sacred well of Santa Cristina, the 'slow food' district of Montiferru and the Tharros archaeological site.
1st day: tour start day
Make your way to the hotel in Alghero, the starting point for this cycle tour. Alternatively, private transfers are available from Alghero Airport to the hotel for an additional £20.
2nd day: Capo Caccia loop (57 km)
Explore the charming, narrow streets of Alghero. In this splendid Aragonese (Spanish) city on the Coral Riviera, the locals still speak the ancient Catalan dialect. Your first ride will take you to Capo Caccia, an imposing 168 m high rocky outcrop. Explore the Nettuno caves, accessible from the escala del cabirol, a demanding 656 step long staircase carved into the cliff. On your way, don't miss the prehistoric bastion of Nuraghe Palmavera and the beautiful beaches of Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto. The route back to Alghero takes you through countryside covered with vineyards and olive groves. This region produces world renowned oil and wines.
3rd day: Alghero – Bosa (50 km)
On today's ride you will cycle along a scenic coastal road, across the cliffs overlooking the sea. As you cycle, admire the view of the gulf of Alghero and Capo Caccia. Be sure to catch a glimpse of the stunning, pink, red and grey cliffs of Cape Marargiu. You will end the day in Bosa, a medieval town famous for its fine embroidery and gold filigree works.
4th day: Bosa loop (21/62 km)
Today there are two ride options available. The short route meanders through the vineyards along the Malvasia wine route. You will have the opportunity to taste the famous DOC wines at the various caves. The longer option is a ring route, which will lead you round the area where the griffons nest, going up towards Montresta and passing by the nuraghe Appiu, as far as the spectacular rocky outcrops and inlets of Capo Marrargiu. If you're lucky you’ll catch sight of this rare breed of Mediterranean vulture on this ride.
5th day: Bosa – Santu Lussurgiu (55 km)
During today's ride you will be flanked by vineyards and olive groves as far as Flussio and Tinnura. These two, small towns are famous for their reed and wicker baskets and for their murales (wall paintings). You will continue through the pasturelands of Sagama, where you will see Mediterranean brush landscape stretching as far as the eye can reach, until you reach the springs of San Leonardo. This area has the richest water supply in the whole of Sardinia. At Santu Lussurgiu you can enjoy a well-deserved rest, at a charming diffuse hotel, consisting of several tastefully restored old houses.
6th day: Santa Cristina loop (42 km)
Visit the rural museum in Santulussurgiu and cycle to the archaeological site of Santa Cristina. Here you will find an impressive sacred well dating back 1800BC.
7th day: Santu Lussurgiu – Cabras (57 km)
Today, on your final ride, you will discover the splendid natural scenery of the Montiferru. This ‘slow-food’ area is famous for its much appreciated Sardinian-Modican cows and its typical casizzolu, a stretched curd cheese. After a while, the land will slope down to the sea, bringing us to the Marine Protected Area of the Sinis, home to pink flamingo and herons. Here, we take a dirt track, flanked by a series of pristine, white quartz beaches. Then on through a charming fishermen’s hamlet, where you will find one of the most important Early Christian churches in Sardinia, and continue to Tharros, a fascinating archaeological site on the sea shore, with a wealth of Phoenician and Roman remains. The bike tour ends in Cabras.
