Get lost in the rich tradition, wonderful gastronomy, and fascinating history of Burgundy. People have been lured to this beautiful and gently rolling landscape, with its sleepy villages, pleasant rivers and canals, and world famous wines for centuries.
Burgundy is old France. A land of culture, countryside, and the finer things in life. Stately historic castles, and miles of straight Roman roads with magnificent Romanesque churches are a constant reminder of Burgundy’s heritage. Allow yourself to be surprised by the beauty of the pleasant landscapes and the impressive, traditional architecture.
As soon as you arrive, the treasures of Dijon, like the Church Notre Dame and the Tomb of the Dukes are sure to impress. The Dukes, in medieval Burgundy, were more important than the king of France himself. The influence of the Dukes was reknowned around the world, and they were particularly close to the English throne.
A countryside of rolling vinyards is waiting for you today. Savour the heart of Burgund as you ride. Take time to look at the wine château of Aloxe Corton, with its delightfully ornate roof, or the 12th Century Clos de Vougeot Château, which was the property of the Citeaux abbey for several centuries. Lter today, you will ride through the town Nuits-Saint-Georges. Here, they have been producing famous wines for a thousand years. It is not an experience to be missed, so you have a tasting here today.
This morning, you can visit the rich wine capital, with the famous Hôtel Dieu. This former hospital is a masterpiece of 15th century Gothic art, built after the Hundred Year War.Today you will head to some of the most famous wine villages in the world, such as Pommard and Mercurey. This area is well known for its historical monuments, and there are many relics to the past that can be seen on route, such as the old village wash houses.
Today you will reach the Côte Chalonnaise. Situated between the foothills of the Morvan Mountains and the plain of the River Saône, the Côte Chalonnaise is a perfect geographical bridge between the famous wine-growing areas of the Côte de Beaune to the north, and the Mâconnais to the south. The area itself is no less distinguished and its own array of wonderful attractions. At Cormatin you can see the magnificent, château before you follow the circular route, that will eventually bring you to Cluny.
Cluny was once a very important place. The Abbey was one of Europe's biggest until the 16th century. Cluny and Saint Philibert are two of the most notable Romanesque churches, and are well worth seeing. From here you are crossing the splendid landmark of the Chalonnais until you reach the charming town of Tournus. Tournus is set on the banks of the Saône. Here, the ancient Abbey of Philibert is waiting to be explored.
For all of today's riding, the Saône River is never far away. Chalon is a busy, yet picturesque river port town that still retains much of its traditionalcharm and architecture. It is also notable as the birthplace of Nicéphore Niepce, the inventor of photography. The most interesting museum is the “Musée Nicéphore Niepce”. Some sites worthy of note are, the gothic cathedral in the heart of the city, the chapel, and the pharmacy of the former hospital. Take time to explore at your leisure. Overnight in Chalon.
Today you will cycle along the Canal du Centre with very nice impressions, vineyards until Beaune. On the way you will cross the Cote Chalonnaise, with its vineyards and small hills. Very lovely landscape. Way back with the train (30 minutes) to Dijon.
This tour is only slightly hilly, and not overly difficult. On the day 5 there is a slight challenge on the way to Cluny. The route is mainly on asphalted side streets, as well as economic way and cycle track.
