The tour starts in the pretty village of Krimml, high in the Hohe Tauern National Park, and close to Europe’s highest waterfall which plunges 1,250 feet in three beautiful cascades. The cycling route follows the Salzach Valley on dedicated paths, through pine forests, picturesque villages and flower-strewn meadows. As you approach Kaprun, the snow-capped peaks of Austria’s highest mountain range come into view, at 12,400 feet the Grossglockner is an awesome sight.
The route continues, along the lakeside, through stylish Zell am See, then onwards to Lofer and Salzburg. The tour ends in the river city of Passau. The bike paths on this tour are well detailed and signposted. The route leads through quiet villages on paved paths and country roads. For a few very brief sections you will ride on unpaved paths. This cycling tour is also suitable for families.
Day 1: Individual arrival to Krimml
In Krimml you find the largest European waterfall. On a well-designed trail you can admire this natural spectacle. Your bikes will be available at the booked accommodation.
Day 2: Krimml - Mittersill/Stuhlfelden (approx. 35 km)
You start your cycle trip having fantastic views to the mountain “Großvenediger”, which is snow-covered even during summer month. Passing the “Obersulzbachtal” you will soon reach your today´s destination. In Mittersill you should schedule some time to visit the museum “Nationparkwelten”.
Day 3: Mittersill/Stuhlfelden - Kaprun/Zell am See (approx. 30 km)
Your tour goes through the „Nationalpark Hohe Tauern“ and „Oberpinzgau“. On this trail you will have a fabulous backdrop with lush green meadows and small villages. The landscape will remind you on some fairy-tales! In Kaprun you can visit the “Hochgebirgsstauseen” (high-mountain reservoir).
Day 4: Rest day in Kaprun/Zell am See
You can use this day for a refreshing bath in the Lake Zeller See. The more sportive cyclers can do an extra round along the lake. Alternatively, you can make a day-trip with public busses on the “Großglockner” which is the highest mountain of Austria. A stroll along the esplanade will remind you on a more south destination and certainly you will forget your daily hassles!
Day 5: Kaprun/Zell am See - Lofer (approx. 50 km)
You will cycle through “Maria Alm” with its famous pilgrimage church. The lunch break you can enjoy in Saalfelden. Other highlights on your way to Lofer are the Seisenbergklamm and Lamprechtshöhle near Weißbach.
Day 6: Lofer - Salzburg (approx. 50 km)
Today will lead you mostly through the Saalachtal. Bad Reichenhall in the “small German angle” will enchant you with Bavarian flair. After a short distance you will have reached Salzburg, the city of Mozart. The cultural offer will embrace you. You should allow yourself enough extra time for a stroll trough the city and a visit to Mozart´s birth house.
Day 7: Salzburg - Burghausen (approx. 60 km)
You will leave Salzburg and its Alps. On this route you are cycling through the foothills of the Alps. The “Tauern” ends in Tittmoning and from here you have to follow the trail along the Lower Inn before you will reach your destination Burghausen. It is a magnificent old town and has the largest castle complex in Central Europe.
Day 8: Burghausen - Obernberg am Inn/Bad Füssing (approx. 50 km)
Today you cycle along the river Inn up to Braunau. This town is perfect for taking a lunch break. On your way there are numerous bird colonies. From here you can follow the bike path on the Bavarian or Austrian side. Your destination Obernberg has a well known marketplace with Baroque buildings.
Day 9: Obernberg am Inn/Bad Füssing - Passau (approx. 40 km)
You will soon reach „Stift Reichersberg“ which is worth a visit. On your route along the river Inn you will cycle through small towns like Schärding. At its Baroque market square you can take a break. Not far and you will have reached the final destination of this beautiful bike trip: Passau. The three-river city has much to offer. In the cathedral of Passau you will see the largest church organ in the world. A river-cruise would certainly be a grand finale of this wonderful bike ride.
Day 10: Departure, transfer back or extension
In Passau there's a lot to discover. We would be appreciated to book an extension of your trip.
Entire tour goes along the Tauern Cycle Path which is well-signposted throughout, from Salzburg however you follow the local cycle paths. You cycle on quiet, asphalted or gravel cycle paths or rural roads, only occasionally is there moderate traffic where it is unfortunately unavoidable. There are only very few accents to tackle.

Flights are available with a number of airlines to your required airport or you can travel to the start using alternative methods such as rail or road.

About the Rental Bikes
This cycling holiday uses quality crossbar and unisex hybrid bikes based on KTM frame technology, Selle Royal saddles, Shimano components and puncture-proof tyres to ensure that you have an enjoyable cycle tour. The bikes feature modern V-brakes, aluminium frames with mudguards, comfortable saddles and a rack for a supplied waterproof pannier.
You will also receive a handlebar bag and map holder for easy navigation when riding your daily itinerary. Prices advertised on the website include standard bike hire (unless stated). Colour and specification may vary from the image shown.

Rental Bike PLUS
For 2020, there is an additional bike rental option available for a supplement. The PLUS hybrid bike now available on most cycling holidays is sportier with higher quality brakes (Magura HS 11) and better specification gears (Shimano Deore XT). The riding position is designed to have a slightly sportier sitting posture and a high quality Suntour suspension fork gives smooth riding on most surfaces. All accessories are compatible with the new PLUS bike rental option.
Accessories
If you would like GPX files for a suitable device, please request them at the time of booking. Devices are not provided and please make sure that you bring along with you any fittings required to attach the Garmin (or similar) to the handlebars. You might want to download maps onto your phone to avoid data charges when roaming.
All bikes are provided with standard flat pedals. You can bring your own cycling pedals, but ensure that you have the correct tools to remove the pedals if the tour does not have a welcome meeting. You may also not be able to travel through airports with the tools if you are carrying hand luggage only.
You can rent a men's bike with a crossbar, unisex/female bike with a sloping tube or an electric bike for a supplement.
Gears
7 speed bikes are equipped with a Shimano Nexus gear hub and 21 speed bikes have a Shimano Alivio derailleur. We request 21 speed bikes for all cycling holidays (when available).
Frame Sizing
When you make a booking with us, we take your height(s) and the appropriate bike size is matched up accordingly. Unisex frame 21-gears with freewheel. Sizes: 56 / 51 / 46 / 43 cm. Unisex 7-gears-bikes with back pedalling brake. Sizes: 56 / 51 / 46 cm. Men’s speed bikes 21-gears with free wheel and crossbar. Sizes: 64 / 60 / 56 "sloping" cm. Helmets are not provided and you will need to bring your own to use.
We always recommend wearing a helmet when on your cycling holiday!
Bike Hire Insurance
This cycle tour benefits from bike insurance against rental bike theft and damage in the holiday price. Please make sure you lock up the bike, leave it where told by the hotel and treat your hire bicycle as if the bike was your own. Any negligent treatment of the bike will exempt you from cover. We advise you to ensure that you have adequate travel insurance for your cycling holiday prior to arrival.
Electric Bike Hire
Why not upgrade your cycling experience to an E-Bike (Electric Bike)? Using a power assisted bike is a great way to go on a cycling holiday and will help you smooth out inclines or longer days in the saddle. Each E-Bike features an LCD display, removable batteries for easy charging and assistance up to 25 km/h with a range of around 120 km for each full charge depending on usage.
