From Nantes to La Rochelle, visit some of the highlight's of France's Atlantic Coast. Cycle along the majestic estuary of La Loire before reaching the serenity of the beautiful peninsula of the Pays de Retz. South Brittany and the Côte de Jade boast a coastline with sandy coves, jagged cliffs and picturesque hamlets, and the diverse landscape will seduce you like the fragrances of the sea air which accompany you all along this trip.
You will pass by charming seaside resorts such as Pornic, the coast’s flagship city, then carry on your journey through the salt marsh of Vendée before reaching the Island of Noirmoutier, a nature jewel. The Côte de Lumière passes by beaches, forests and sandy dunes before you reach Les Sables d’Olonne, renowened for its fine sandy beach and its charming landscapes, shortly followed by La Tranche sur Mer. Your tour will end in La Rochelle after passing the protected marshlands of Poitevin.
Day 1 : Arrival at Nantes
Arrive at your hotel in Nantes, where you will find the road book and bikes waiting for you. Capital of Western France and certified "City of Art and History", antes will seduce you with its historical and cultural heritage. Among the essential sights are the "Château des ducs de Bretagne", the Castle of the Dukes of Britanny, and the "Jardin des Plantes", one of the largest botanical gardens in France. A more recent addition to the city is the "Machines de l’Ile", the Machines of the Island. The former shipyards are now a cultural hub, with several structures and mechanical installations, the most famous of which is a 40-foot high mechanical elephant which can carry up to 50 passengers.

Day 2 : Nantes – Saint Brevin - 60-65 km
From Nantes, you will follow the "La Vélodyssée" and "La Loire à Vélo" bike paths to the ocean. Along the estuary of La Loire river, you will pass canals, ports and the outside art gallery "Estuaire", a contemporary exhibition in an open-air museum. Your day finishes in Saint-Brévin-les-Pins, where you can feel the sea air and its conifer scents, and enjoy the sand dunes and fine sandy beaches.

Day 3 : Saint Brevin – Bouin – 53 km
Today, within just a few kilometres, the landscape changes from the large beaches of Saint-Brévin lined with pines, to the charming sandy coves and jagged coastline of the Baie de Bourgneuf. The bay is quiet and pleasant, punctuated by fishing spots and little seaside resorts. This part of the route is also known as the "Vendée Atlantique Oyster Road", and there are plenty of opportunities to stop and taste the local speciality! If possible, you should spend somein Pornic, before crossing into the Vendée region, and the village of Bouin.

Day 4 : Bouin – Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie – 59-62 km
Today you will ride to the famous and mythical "Passage du Gois", unique in Europe - this 4.2km road under the ocean is passable only at low tide. Remember to check the tide times the day before, as it is only rideabl;e for 3 hours per day, sometimes very early or very late in the day. Also, be careful not to slip on the cobblestones as the tide goes out. Across the passage you will find Noirmoutier, a preserved Vendéen island with diverse landscapes and an authenticity that will delight you.
If the tide prevents you from crossing the Passage du Gois, you will instead cycle past the peaceful and serene marshlands of the Vendée, passing by Beauvoir and its 17th century market town, and Saint-Jean de Monts. You will then follow the Vendéen cornice, composed of amazing cliffs and its famous rock formation "The five Pineaux", befreo reaching the lively city of St Gilles-Croix-de-Vie.

Day 5 : Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie – Les Sables d’Olonne - 40 km
Your trip continues via Brétignolles and Brem, along a nice easy cycle path with a sea view. You'll then head inland to enjoy the amazing landscape of the ancient salt marsh and the Olonne forest, leading you to Les Sables d’Olonne. Here you will find a large fine sandy beach where you can relax and finish your day, or alternatively you can explore the charming streets of this town.

Day 6 : Les Sables d’Olonne - Tranche sur Mer 45 km
Your journey continues close to the sea, before the Vélodyssée cycle path weaves between forests and craggy coasts, passing a variety of amazing natural sites; Cayola Bay with its marvellous view over the sea, the Point of Payré and its marshes, and lively ports like the Port of la Guittière, an oyster farming village and designated remarkable site. A final meander through the forest allows you to take in the sights of the pines and holm oaks before joining La Tranche sur Mer and its 13km of fine sandy beach.

Day 7 : La Tranche sur Mer – La Rochelle 68-72 km
On your final day of cycling, the Vélodyssée brings you through one of the last natural lagoons of the Atlantic Coast, the lagoon of Belle Henriette. Very wild, it houses a lot of protected birds and will delight nature lovers. The route continues through the dried out part of the Poitevin marshlands, by country lane and quiet roads offering a criss-crossed landscape. Finally, after crossing the Sèvre Niortaise, the route follows the canal on an easy and quiet track which leads you back to the coast and the effervescent city of La Rochelle.
La Rochelle is a lively tourist city, remarkable for its history. You can stroll around the old harbor and its towers which guarded the harbour from the 13th century to the 15th century. You can also enjoy the city centre and its arches as well as the 15th century town hall.

Day 8 : Departure after breakfast.
After breakfast, please arrange your onward travel from La Rochelle. We recomend spending an extra night in La Rochelle and taking the opportunity to visit the local island.
Option Loop to l'île de Ré - 30-60 km
This loop tour to the island of “Ré” passes through the villages of “Flotte en Ré” (dating from the 18th century) and its fishing boats, as well as “Saint-Martin” with its fortifications and its fortress. You can walk along the oyster beds, salt marshes and the nature reserve of the “illeau Niges”. The route back takes you by “La Couarde” and “Bois beach”.

This cycling holiday uses hybrid bikes with gearing suitable for the local terrain. All bikes are regularly maintained and offer comfort along with good quality components.
You will receive an accessories package including a bicycle pannier bag with a good capacity, repair kit, lock, key, and air pump.
When you make a booking with us, we take your height(s) and the appropriate bike size is matched up accordingly.
Helmets are not provided and you will need to bring your own to use. We always recommend wearing a helmet when on your cycling holiday.
E-Bike Upgrades:
Why not upgrade your cycling experience to an E-Bike (Electric Bike)? Using a power assisted bike is a great way to go on a cycling holiday and will help you smooth out inclines or longer days in the saddle. Each E-Bike features an LCD display, removable batteries for easy charging and assistance up to 25 km/h with a range of around 120 km for each full charge depending on usage.
