When people think of the great European cycling destinations, they think France, they think Spain, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands. All the countries known for their great cycling heroes, Grand Tours, and famous one day races.
Poland is not usually a destination that first springs to mind. But, with glistening rivers and majestic lakes, fresh green forests, and breath-taking mountains, not to mention miles of brand new cycle paths; Eastern Europe is fast becoming the best cycling paradise you'd never heard about.
Poland has seen a true cycling revolution in the recent years. Miles of separated cycle roads have sprung up in the cities, and across the stunning countryside beyond. Eastern Poland is crossed by a long and impressive cycle route, Green Velo. Małopolska (the region around Krakow) is unique in this respect. Several cycling investments have been carried out here, including a series of roads and bridges (exclusively for cyclists) built along the banks of the Vistula and Dunajec rivers, offering the perfect and most environmentally friendly way to take in the stunning scenery.
Conveniently situated, in the heart of Europe, Poland is a modern country, steeped in history and tradition, where beautiful natural landscapes have been carefully preserved.
The name of the Dunajec (pronounced "doonayeats") River, translates in Old Polish to "son of the Danube", and it is perhaps Poland's most stunning mountain river. Surrounded by impressive mountain ranges and lucious green banks; riding along the river you will feel as though you have been transported right into a fairytale. In the valley of this stunning river you will find yourself in a landscape in no way inferior to that of the Great Daube itself.
As part of a major investment into cycling infrastructure, many kilometers of brand new cycleways and bike bridges were recently built in the Dunajec and Poprad valleys. This means you can discover lesser known gems of the Polish countryside, on brand new routes, and discover Eastern Europe in the best way possible - by bike!
It is not only nature lovers who will revel in a cycle tour of Eastern Europe either! The UNESCO World Herritage designated old town of Krakow is a delightful feast of history, culture, and stunning architecture. Among the city's most important architectural treasures are, St Mary's Church, home to the world-famous altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss; the medieval buildings of Jagiellonian University, Poland's oldest university; Wawel Cathedral, adjacent to the 11th century Wawel Castle; Europe's largest medieval town square; Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter; and the promenade along the Vistula at the foot of Wawel Castle. There is so much to see and do in this vibrant and varied city, you will doubless have to extend your tour to uncover everything that the former city of the of Polish kings has to offer!
Most of our cycling tours through Poland, the Ukraine, and Eastern Europe take place predominantly on 100% traffic free, purpose made cycle paths; making for a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable cycling experience that is suitable for all the family. There are only a few gentle climbs and undulations on the routes, meaning that the tours are suitable for any level of cyclist, even beginners and children. Most of the routes on the tours are fairly short, leaving you plenty of time to explore the wonderful landscapes and towns at each destination. However in most cases the daily rides can be adapted (made longer or shorter) to suit your cycling preferences, so you can make a cycling holiday that works best for you!
