Our Favourite Flat Cycling Holiday Routes
For many, their first impressions of cycling holidays are climbing hills and mountains. Challenging work you might think? That doesn’t have to be the case with Freewheel cycling holidaysHolidays. Our customers range from young families to the golden generation so it’s important to us to have cycling tours and routes that suit a whole spectrum of abilities and fitness levels. As well as offering those hilly adventures, we also have excellent cycling holidays with flat routes that are just as fun and memorable, just a little less testing on the legs. With that in mind, we thought we’d let you in on some of our favourite flat cycling holidays to try across Europe.
Cycling holidays in Holland are some of the best around when it comes to following flat routes. The highest point in Holland is roughly 300m above sea level, and when you compare that to some of the climbs in England, it’s pretty much a big hill. The Netherlands is the land of the bicycle and is something of a cycling lovers’ retreat. Our six Holland cycle tours take in everything that is great about the country, and none more so than our Bike and Barge holidays. We have four to offer, with our North of Amsterdam cycling holiday offering the flattest routes of them all and a chance to discover Amsterdam by boat. The landscape of North Holland is certainly varied with country roads leading you to ever-present waterways, small dykes and more than a few working windmills. The old ports of the Ijsselmeer – Volendam, Hoorn, and Enkhuizen – are a delight to explore, and will give you a real flavour of the old Holland when these towns were at the centre of the Golden Age of prosperity. It’s the kind of holiday route that is well worth either adding or ticking off your bucket list.
Danube Cycle Path
They say that being around water makes you calmer and more creative, so what better way to unwind then cycling Passau to Vienna on our brilliant Danube cycling holidays?. Running alongside the famous river, our flat cycling tours down the Danube River allow you to retrace the route taken by the Romans, legendary Nibelungs and even one or two of history’s most powerful Kings and Emperors. You can either start your route in the baroque town of Schärding or Passau, before passing through various districts of Upper and Lower Austria and finally to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. You will love the breath-taking natural beauty of the Danube valley and the Schlögen bend, or perhaps you will fall in love with the landscapes along the Danube river such as the Machland, the Strudengau, or the famous Wachau. It’s not just the sights and sounds that will amaze you either, from savoury dumpling specialities to the wines of the Buschenschenken tavern, you’ll be plenty fed and watered along the way. This cycling holiday is by far one of our favourites and is just perfect for a first cycling holiday with the whole family.
